Jardins Défiants (Defiant Gardens) emerges from extensive research into the life and work of Derek Jarman (UK, 1942–1994)—artist, filmmaker, writer, and pioneering gay rights activist. In 1986, shortly after being diagnosed as HIV-positive, Jarman left London and moved to Dungeness, on the southeast coast of Kent. ‚Jardins Défiants (Defiant Gardens)‘ brings together a range of artistic practices that engage with the garden from a utopian, decolonial, and feminist perspective, each reflecting a vision of nature as a space of emancipation.
